Mycarial Metabolism

Myocardial Perfusion

1. An imaging procedure using N-13 Ammonia to assess regional myocardial perfusion.

2. Indications

  • a. Assessment of myocardial viability, when used in conjunction with the Myocardial Metabolism Study, prior to and/or following pharmacological intervention or surgical revascularization.

    b. Evaluation of myocardial perfusion in select patients in whom SPECT perfusion imaging may be technically suboptimal.

3. Procedure

a. consultation with Nuclear Medicine/P.E.T. Center personnel is required.

b. The patient must be fasting (except for water) a minimum of four hours prior to the study.

c. The taking of scheduled medication on the day of the procedure will be discussed between patient and P.E.T. scheduling personnel.

d. Myocardial Blood Flow will be assessed with the patient at rest alone or with pharmacological (vasodilator) intervention using either dipyridamole or adenosine. Signed informed consent is required before a vasodilator can be given. Contraindications for use of dipyridamole or adenosine are found under the myocardial perfusion imaging procedures in the Nuclear Medicine section of Formulary.

e. The patient will be monitored with E.C.G. throughout the study.

f. An I.V. line will be placed by P.E.T. Center personnel.

g. An arterial line will be placed by P.E.T. Center personnel, for blood sampling, if a quantitative study is required.

h. Length of study is 2-3 hours.
