Regional Cerebral Metabolism

 

1. An imaging procedure using fludeoxyglucose F18 (F-18 FDG) to assess regional distribution of cerebral metabolism.

 

2. Indications

  • a. Localization and differentiation of primary brain tumors.

    b. Assessment of response to controlled brain activation or pharmacologic intervention.

    c. Tumor recurrence vs. radiation necrosis.

    d. Seizure focus localization.

    e. Assessment of tumor response to chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.

    f. Stroke.

    g. Evaluation of neurological disorders.

    1. Behavior changes
    2. Concussion
    3. Dementia
    4. Memory disorder
    5. Tremors

3. Procedure

a. Consultation with Nuclear Medicine/P.E.T. staff is required.

b. An l.V. line will he placed by P.E.T. Center personnel.

c. An arterial line will be placed by P.E.T. Center personnel if a quantitative study is requested.

d. The patient must be fasting (except for water) a minimum of 4 hours prior to the study.

e. The patient should not receive l.V. dextrose solutions for a minimum of 4 hours prior to the study.

f. Blood glucose level will be checked prior to the injection of F-18 FDG. Glucose regulation may be required prior the study if the patient is diabetic.

g. Length of study is approximately 2-3 hours.
