Scheduling A P.E.T. study request form is completed at the time of scheduling. Information requested on the form is necessary and important to facilitate the P.E.T. procedure. P.E.T. scanning specifically for heart function and tumor metabolism reflect glucose metabolism. Therefore, it is important to know in advance if the patient is diabetic so appropriate instructions can be given before the day of the scan. It may be inappropriate to schedule P.E.T. imaging immediately following surgery, radiation therapy, or chemo therapy because innaccurate P.E.T. information may be obtained. Women of childbearing potential are screened for pregnancy. Every effort is made to schedule P.E.T. scans within twenty-four hours of the requested time and to coordinate with other departments or services within the UIHC to minimize delays for patients especially those traveling from great distances. Patients or family members are contacted the day before a P.E.T. scan by a nurse from the P.E.T. Imaging Center to give instructions and provide information in preparation for the scan.
