How does PET work?

How Does P.E.T. Work?

There are four major functions that are performed before, during and after P.E.T. scanning which make up the over-all P.E.T. technique and include the following:

  • Production of the radioactive starting material which is called a radionuclide,
  • Synthesis of the radioactive tracer or radiopharmaceutical in the radiochemistry laboratory,
  • Injection of the radiotracer and commencement of PET imaging, and
  • Formulation of the P.E.T. data into meaningful images of tissue function for interpretation.
