Current Research Initiatives

General areas of research interest at the UIHC P.E.T. Imaging Center includes cognitive activation, myocardial viability and myocardial blood flow, tumor metabolism and pain receptor studies. Research has been conducted to study brain function with radiopharmaceuticals to measure metabolism, blood flow, and receptor density. P.E.T.'s computer-generated color images provide a color-coded display of the level or degree of function such as brain blood flow and metabolism, tumor metabolism, and myocardial blood flow and glucose metabolism, this last being a primary indicator of cardiac viability. Recent abstracts of research studies from the Departments of Neurology, Otolaryngology, Psychiatry, and Radiology follow:

Department of Neurology

Department of Neurosurgery

  • Carotid Occlusion Surgery Study (COSS), Dr. Hitchon

Department of Otolaryngology

Department of Psychiatry
